My godfather is gay. I grew up not understanding why some people were not accepting of gay people because my godfather was normal — equally deserving of the rights all Americans enjoy. I stand by people being their authentic selves, expressing their identities in a way that feels true to who they are, and proudly loving who they love without fear of discrimination.
1. Protecting and respecting gender and sexual orientation
Love is love. People should be able to be their authentic selves, including their gender identity and sexual orientation, without fear of discrimination or any hate-based harm. People can both live their personal religious truths while respecting our other freedoms.
Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill and anti-transgender legislation that has recently been passed throughout the U.S. is unacceptable and has no place in Virginia. Such discrimination denies children valuable education and perpetuates unfairly high rates of bullying and violence experienced by members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
According to the ACLU, currently just 20 states and Washington, D.C., allow people to update gender markers on IDs without submitting medical documentation. I support this being allowed in all of the U.S.
Urge the Senate to pass the Equality Act (H.R. 5/S. 393), which “prohibits discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity in areas including public accommodations and facilities, education, federal funding, employment, housing, credit, and the jury system.” (ACLU petition for you to sign)
